Rikishi. Oyakata. Degenerates. Lend me your Mawashi.
It is time.
This basho begins the only way it should. The way I have wanted it to from the beginning.
All of us.
In the same room.
With fake yen.
Sushi in hand.
Sake flowing.
Grown adults yelling numbers at each other over men who slap bellies for a living.
You are officially invited to the Live Fantasy Sumo Auction Draft.
This is not your grandma’s face-time draft.
This is not a polite snake draft.
This is chaos, honour, and poor financial decisions in real time.
Come hungry.
Come thirsty.
Come ready to overpay for a Maegashira you “have a good feeling about.”
The Format
This is a live, in-person auction draft.
Each manager will build their team by bidding on rikishi as they are nominated.
Highest bidder wins the wrestler.
Simple. Brutal. Fair.
We draft fast.
We draft loud.
We draft together.
Roster Rules
Each team will draft:
- 4 active rikishi
- 1 reserve rikishi
That is it.
Five total wrestlers per team.
The reserve can be swapped in at any time if injuries or disasters strike.
Because sumo always delivers disasters.
Auction Rules
- Every manager starts with the same auction budget.
- Any manager may nominate a rikishi when it is their turn.
- Bidding is open and verbal.
- Bids increase in whole yen only.
- Once bidding stops and the count is called, the highest bid wins.
- That cost is final and comes out of your budget.
- You cannot exceed your remaining budget.
- You must always be able to field a legal roster.
No takebacks.
No sympathy.
No “I didn’t mean that bid.”
After the Draft
Once the auction ends:
- Undrafted rikishi become free agents.
- If one of your wrestlers is injured or withdrawn, you may replace them from the free agent pool.
- No waiver periods.
- No FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget for you nerds)
- First come, first served.
This league values decisiveness and guts.
The Important Stuff
There will be:
- Sushi.
- Sake.
- Beer.
- Trash talk.
- Questionable bidding strategies.
- At least one person immediately regretting everything.
Bring booze of your choosing.
Bring your laptop or phone.
Bring your A-game.
Most importantly, bring yourself. Wearing a kimono is encouraged.
This league is better when we are in the same room.
Sumo deserves ceremony.
And yelling.
See you at the auction.
Chris
